The Human Cost of Fast Fashion: A Discussion with Soreyda Benedit-Begley

Fashion brands worldwide are known to quickly create trendy and inexpensive clothing to meet ever-changing consumer trends, a practice known as “fast fashion.” However, as sustainability becomes an emerging mainstream value, buying patterns are changing. Many consumers are beginning to question the environmental costs of fast fashion waste. Even so, many are unaware of the severe human costs also created by fast fashion brands.

Join Lexington-based fashion designer and activist Soreyda Benedit-Begley for a discussion on the human costs of fast fashion. Originally from Honduras, Soreyda herself experienced the harsh reality of fast fashion while working in a sweatshop as a teenager. Today, she shares her knowledge to advocate for worker’s rights, fair trade, and sustainable development.

This discussion is sponsored by the UK Gaines Center for the Humanities and the UK Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles program.

The event is free and open to the public. Register here!
