Behind the Lines: Redistricting and Gerrymandering Explained

With the 2020 census in the books, both the City Council and state legislature have worked to redraw district lines in Louisville and across the state. Redistricting is mandated by the State Constitution to reflect changes in population, but when does it become “gerrymandering?” What is the difference between that and redistricting? How can you have a voice in the process?

Dee Pregliasco (League of Women Voters) and Dr. Charlie Zhang (Department of Geographic & Environmental Sciences, University of Louisville) will examine the history of and current state of redistricting in Louisville and Kentucky, as well as the methods and science behind the lines. Dee Pregliasco is currently the VP and Chair of the Redistricting Committee at the League of Women Voters, Kentucky. Dr. Charlie Zhang is a professor in both the Department of Geographic & Environmental Sciences, and the Department of Urban Planning & Public Affairs at UofL.
