Louisville Grows
Giving Grove Coordinator
Louisville Grows partners with The Giving Grove to revitalize Louisville’s West End through the transformative initiative of creating sustainable community orchards in underserved neighborhoods. This collaboration addresses critical community issues like food insecurity and limited green spaces by establishing orchards that provide local residents with fresh produce.
The Giving Grove Coordinator, facilitated by Louisville Grows, oversees this initiative, handling the development and maintenance of the orchards from planning and planting to nurturing a variety of fruit trees and bushes. This key position that we are in need of grant funding for plays a pivotal role in managing project logistics, engaging the community, and conducting educational outreach, ensuring the orchards' alignment with broader urban canopy enhancement and food accessibility goals. This initiative deeply involves the community in the development and ongoing care of the orchards, empowering residents with sustainable orchard care skills necessary for long-term stewardship. Louisville Grows and The Giving Grove together organize educational programs to raise public awareness about the environmental benefits of urban orchards. These programs include workshops on tree care, sustainable agricultural practices, and the ecological benefits of biodiverse plantings, all aimed at promoting environmental stewardship. The Giving Grove Coordinator is a crucial position that Louisville Grows urgently needs to establish to spearhead and initiate work on the Giving Grove initiative. Currently unfilled, this role is pivotal for the successful implementation and management of sustainable community orchards in Louisville's West End. The coordinator will be responsible for the overall direction and execution of the project, from the initial planning stages through to the ongoing development and maintenance of the orchards. This position will serve as the central point of coordination for all activities related to the orchards, including site selection, volunteer recruitment and training, and community engagement. The Giving Grove Coordinator will work closely with local residents, ensuring that the community is actively involved in every step of the process and that the orchards meet the specific needs and expectations of the neighborhood. By establishing this role, Louisville Grows aims to enhance its capacity to deliver on its mission to create greener, healthier neighborhoods through urban forestry, effectively addressing food insecurity and environmental sustainability in one of the city’s most underserved areas.
