Community Engagement Workshop
"Community Engagement Workshop - Empowering Residents to Advocate for Cleaner Air and a Healthier Louisville” will launch with building curriculum and the framework for workshops so that local advocates can better champion for healthier communities in front of regulatory agencies.
Every year, federal and state agencies issue thousands of permits and authorizations in Kentucky, allowing pollutants to be discharged into our rivers and streams, emitted into our air, and disposed of on land. Yet, in Kentucky, no more than a handful of these permits are ever reviewed by the public to assure that they protect human health and the environment. Citizen oversight of the permitting process has been hamstrung for decades by a lack of capacity and financial resources, insufficient access to legal and technical experts, and a lack of training resources and templates for residents and community groups. Increasing meaningful public participation in the public comment period of the permitting process is critical to a healthier Commonwealth. Through this project, we will provide the educational resources needed for individuals to understand the various permitting and compliance processes of Louisville’s Air Pollution Control District (APCD).
