Feed the West

Feed the West is a flagship program of Change Today, Change Tomorrow (CTCT) dedicated to alleviating food insecurity in the West End of Louisville. This area, marked by its resilience, faces significant challenges as it is geographically isolated and historically underserved, leading to limited access to fresh, nutritious food. The program aims to dismantle these barriers by providing direct, barrier-free access to healthy food options for families who live in a food apartheid, with only one grocery store serving a large population.

Established in 2019, Feed the West operates through a community-driven approach that includes both home delivery and pop-up grocery events. By delivering groceries directly to residents' homes and setting up distribution points in key neighborhoods, the program ensures that families receive $50 worth of fresh produce, meat, dairy products, and other essential items weekly. This method addresses the critical issues of transportation and accessibility, which often prevent families from obtaining healthy food. The program serves a diverse age range, from infants to seniors, with a focus on the predominantly Black/African American community. Each month, Feed the West distributes approximately 19,200 pounds of food, translating to 16,000 meals. This initiative not only improves dietary habits but also enhances overall health and wellbeing, aiming to reduce racial health disparities in the area.

Feed the West is powered by a dedicated team of food justice advocates, staff members, and volunteers, along with strong partnerships with local businesses and organizations like Trader Joe’s, which provide consistent in-kind food donations. The program also benefits from robust community support through fundraising efforts. In essence, Feed the West embodies CTCT’s mission to challenge systemic barriers and create a healthier, more equitable community by ensuring reliable access to nutritious food for all residents of the West End.
