Choosing an Installer

The following are some simple tips for choosing an installer and questions to ask installers. It is recommended to speak with more than one company to find the one that offers you the best value and is one you look forward to working with.

Tips for Choosing a Solar Installer

  • Be sure to acquire multiple quotes when shopping for an installer

  • Ask about the installer’s solar installation experience, whether they pull permits, and for references or recommendations from site owners of previous solar jobs

  • Ask about panel brands, and inverter and company warranties

  • Look for their rating on the Better Business Bureau

  • Ask if their electricians and roofers are licensed and insured

Questions for Installers

  • How long has the company been in business?

  • Do they use NABCEP certified staff? If not, why not?

  • In addition to the manufacturers’ warranties, does the installer warranty their labor? And for how long?

  • Do the (panel and inverter) manufacturers have a telephone number and address where they can be reached should the product be defective?

  • Is there a warranty or guarantee covering the product? How long is the product covered?

  • If a product is defective can you get a cash refund or do you have to replace the product with a new one from the same manufacturer?

  • Can you get the refund or exchange policy in writing?
