The Planning Commission routinely meets on the first and third Thursday of each month at 1:00 pm in the Old Jail Building Auditorium located at 514 W. Liberty Street.

The Louisville Metro Planning Commission is charged by statutes to administer zoning and subdivision regulations and to prepare a comprehensive plan to serve as a guide for development of public and private property.
Requests for zoning changes are researched by Planning and Design staff. The Commission holds a public hearing and votes to recommend approval or denial to the proper legislative body. Public testimony is taken at this hearing. The Commission limits the time for the presentation of testimony, and reading statements on behalf of someone else is not permissible. Authority for final approval or denial rests with the proper legislative body: with the Louisville Metro Council on property within Louisville and Jefferson County but outside the city limits of the county’s twelve second through fourth-class cities with zoning authority; with the city councils of the second, third and fourth-class cities on property within their boundaries. Decisions by the legislative bodies may be appealed to the courts.
The Planning Commission has 10 members that include:
eight citizens appointed to staggered three-year terms; the Mayor of Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government or his designee; and either the Director of Public Works or the County Road Engineer, as determined by the Mayor.
The Commission holds two or three public hearings per month in the Old Jail Building Courtroom, 514 West Liberty Street. Public hearings generally begin at 1 p.m. If there are individuals who want the hearing time after normal working hours, they may submit a petition signed by 200 property owners in Louisville and Jefferson County at least 15 days before the scheduled hearing date and the hearing will be rescheduled. A petition with 300 signatures assures a public hearing after normal working hours in a convenient location (contact Planning and Design staff ((502)574-6230) for details of residency requirements for petition-signers). This petition would also need to be submitted at least 15 days before the scheduled hearing date and the hearing would be rescheduled.
Developers and citizens interested in requesting a zoning change or viewing any public records on such requests may come to the Planning and Design Services offices (444 S. 5th Street, Suite 300, Louisville, 40202) Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
